Merck, a leading science and technology company knows from experience that the International Motor Show in Frankfurt is the perfect place to speak to major car manufacturers about the use of its pigments in varnishes and the possible use of its liquid crystals or oled materials in displays. At the same time, it’s challenging for sales employees to explain the other possible ways in which Merck’s innovative solutions can be used. Innovation managers are constantly looking for ways to visualise the limitless possibilities. It was at the fair that npk design and Merck met.
The first meeting with Merck led to a special kind of cooperation and out-of-the box ‘re-thinking’. This is because Merck was wondering out loud how the innovative solutions it develops can offer limitless design possibilities in the automotive industry. Imagine a new concept in which beauty and technology are combined.
Our design team was given the unique opportunity to design the dashboard of a concept car that incorporated all the latest possible applications of the Merck products. The materials were the starting point for achieving a pure and unique design for the car interior and exterior.
Merck initially proposed creating a mock-up for the trade show stand that included all the possible uses of the solutions that Merck is developing. All the elements of the dashboard in the mock-up had to really work, so a lot of attention was paid to integrating the latest displays and materials. However, the concept also included the option of creating an animation that would attract even more attention at a trade show than a mock-up. After we showed what an animation could do, it was decided to ultimately only implement the mock-up digitally. Now the animation film is being shown on enormous screens at all the Merck stands.
