Innovation behind the screens

Displays for North-South Metro Amsterdam
CSDM holds the media concession for the Amsterdam metro network. As part of this concession, it is responsible for fitting the North-South line section with advertising displays this year. CSDM asked us to develop the display housing and installation of Phase 1.
This involves large format displays (98”) that are integrated into the walls of the stations.
There were strict requirements for the glass facade wall, the various components and the installation space. The end result fully complies with the intended visual quality that the architect (Benthem & Crouwel) defined together with the Municipality of Amsterdam.
The real innovation is mainly on the inside
Our design engineers came up with an innovative solution for the minimal space in the wall recess so that the displays can easily be opened and closed. This solution is technically smart and means that maintenance can be carried out quickly and efficiently.
After unlocking the housing, the weight of the glass and the display is stabilised by a spring mechanism. This allows maintenance to be carried out by one person. In the unfolded position, the maintenance technician can open the display door 180° (parallel to the facade wall), which means passing travellers are never obstructed.
Mechanical complexity: that's also part of npk
The idea was soon on the table; the real challenge was to make it technically feasible. Due to the weight and the limited space, a range of forces are exerted on the spring mechanism and the hinge. Calculation models are essential for the success of such a project. It’s all a matter of calculating, testing, adjusting and calculating again. That way, we can translate and optimise the dynamic behaviour with exactly the right profiles, hinges and springs to make the principle work. Another great achievement by our engineers.
“We’re delighted with the end result of the 98” advertising displays on the North-South line. It was a complex task to create the largest possible advertising area in such a limited space and guarantee easy maintenance and management at the same time. They’ve become real eye-catchers and are now a valuable addition to our premium digital network.”

From design to installation in two months
Realisation follows straight after the development process. Based on our definitive drawing packages and CSDM’s screens and electronics, VDL Industrial Modules produced and installed the first display housings. And all of that took place in just two months. A total of 37 advertising displays will ultimately be installed in Phase 1.
CSDM manages and delivers digital content in retail and public spaces, while VDL produces and installs the solutions. Together, we deliver innovative strength. This collaborative model characterises our working method and approach in product development. We provide added value not just by devising smart solutions but also by actually working out our own ideas into finished products.
